  • History

    Our History

Saco Valley Federal Credit Union was chartered as a Federal Credit Union on February 5, 1947. The Credit Union was founded by the employees of Saco-Lowell Shops for the benefit of their employees and members of their immediate families and organizations of such persons.  Several small industrial groups were added to the Field of Membership over the next 48 years.

    On December 8, 1997,

Saco Valley Credit Union was approved for the change from a federal to a state charter, and expanded its field of membership to include individuals living or working in the communities of Buxton, West Buxton, Dayton, Hollis, South Hollis, Lyman, Saco, Waterboro and North Waterboro, Maine; and members of the immediate families of such individuals.  Then, on September 16, 1999, the State of Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation Bureau of Banking approved the addition of the communities of Biddeford and Old Orchard Beach, Maine into our field of membership.

    On December 5, 1999

Saco Valley Credit Union merged with Nissen Employees Federal Credit Union.  This merger added the employees and family members of Interstate Brands Corporation to our field of membership.  On February 7, 2006, the Maine Bureau of Financial Institutions approved the expansion of Saco Valley Credit Union’s field of membership to include individuals who live, work, worship or attend school in York County or Cumberland County; and immediate family members, organizations, and associations of all such individuals.

    Saco Valley Credit Union

has seen tremendous growth over the years in membership, assets and personnel.  We have grown from a part time employee operation to a one hundred fifteen plus million dollar asset Credit Union with over twenty-five employees in a completely restored two story historical office building at 312 Main Street in Saco with branch offices located at 500 Main Street in Saco and 860 Main Street in Waterboro.
